Merrimac Launches Multi-Mix PICOTM Microtechnology
Shrinks Microwave Components Size 84 to 87 Percent;
Standard Package Delivers Huge Cost Savings
WEST CALDWELL, N.J., July 31, 2001: Freedom of choice, greatly reduced size, and significantly lower cost are customer issues addressed with a new enabling technology solution from Merrimac Industries, Inc. (AMEX: MRM). Designated the Multi-Mix PICO Z-Series, this revolutionary breakthrough in microwave design and manufacturing, delivers single and multifunction products that have the highest power handling ability for the smallest footprint and overall size, and lowest cost of any multilayer construction available today. Multi-Mix PICO Z-Series quadrature hybrids and directional couplers products provide:
- 84 to 87 Percent Size Reduction Compared to Conventional Multilayer Types
- Incredible Power Handling Ability of 100 Watts CW (Continuous Wave)
- Extremely Low Insertion Loss Providing Optimal Efficiency
- Huge Cost Savings of 30 to 45 Percent and Greater...$0.95 Each for Any Quantity of Standard PICO Quads and Couplers Up to 250,000 units
- Standard Size Multi-Mix PICO Z-Series Building Block Architecture...Micro-Multifunction Modules (MMFM®) for Total Integrated Packaging SolutionsTM
Multi-Mix® is a proven highly efficient technology which uses significantly less material and reduces the size and weight of microwave components, while increasing performance and reducing manufacturing cost. Multi-Mix PICO products are a quantum leap in Multi-Mix technology. Consequently, power and performance are maintained while products are priced well below industry levels. Initial Multi-Mix PICO products include quadrature hybrids and directional couplers. These standard products, mounted on tape and reel, are priced at savings of 30 to 45 percent. By utilizing Multi-Mix platform designs, Merrimac is able to offer its customers substantial value. Size reduction for the Multi-Mix PICO Z-Series product line translates into less material usage and lower cost. These savings along with other process efficiencies will benefit Merrimac's customers.
Multi-Mix PICO quadrature hybrids and directional couplers are available immediately. Samples are available for qualified product designs.
Mason N. Carter, Chairman and CEO commented, "The benefits we are providing in Multi-Mix PICO components are the result of listening to our customers. We responded with standard products that deliver a massive 84 to 87 percent size reduction, power handling of 100 watts CW, low insertion loss and huge cost savings. Multi-Mix PICO quadrature hybrids and directional couplers provide RF Microwave customers with freedom of choice, eliminating conventional size/performance/cost tradeoffs. Clearly, there is nothing on the market that compares to it.
"This tiny footprint breaks through previous industry design and process barriers and will now be the standard for Multi-Mix PICO products providing the smallest, most diverse line of high-power, high-frequency micro-components and micro-multifunction modules (MMFM) available. This patented and patent-pending capability is based on well-established, proven, consistent, top quality Multi-Mix packaging."
Carter continued, "These single-function components, together with other active and passive devices, can be combined as building blocks to produce complete multifunction subsystems (MMFM) in dimensions normally required by single function devices using conventional technology. Others may claim to have enabling technology, but we prove it with an open architecture approach to RF Microwave integrated design.
"Complementing this series of PICO quadrature hybrids and PICO directional couplers are other Multi-Mix PICO products, including soon to be announced in-line multicouplers, phase shifters, hybrid junctions, vector modulators and MMFMs. Merrimac is setting the standard by providing innovative RF Microwave design engineers and decision makers alternatives to conventional, bulky, high-priced components and multifunction modules."

About Merrimac
Merrimac Industries, Inc. is a leader in the design and manufacture of Multi-Mix PICO RF Microwave components, assemblies and Micro-Multifunction (MMFM) Modules, serving the wireless telecommunications industry worldwide with enabling technologies for commercial applications. Merrimac is focused on providing Total Integrated Packaging SolutionsTM with Multi-Mix® Microtechnology, a leading edge competency providing value to our customers through miniaturization and integration. The Multi-Mix process for microwave, multilayer integrated MMFM circuitry is a patented method developed by Merrimac Industries based on fluoropolymer composite substrates. The fusion bonding of multilayer structures provides a homogeneous dielectric medium for superior electrical performance at microwave frequencies. The bonded layers may incorporate embedded semiconductor devices, MMICs, etched resistors, passive circuit elements and plated-through via holes to form a three-dimensional subsystem enclosure that requires no further packaging. Merrimac Industries facilities are registered under ISO 9000, an internationally developed set of quality criteria for manufacturing operations.
Merrimac Industries, Inc. and its subsidiary Filtran Microcircuits Inc., with locations in West Caldwell, NJ, San Jose, Costa Rica and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, have approximately 240 co-workers dedicated to the design and manufacture of signal processing components, gold plating of high-frequency microstrip, bonded stripline and thick metal-backed Teflon (PTFE) micro-circuitry and subsystems providing Total Integrated Packaging Solutions for wireless applications. Merrimac (MRM) is listed on the American Stock Exchange. Multi-Mix, Multi-Mix PICO, MMFM and Total Integrated Packaging Solutions are trademarks of Merrimac Industries, Inc.
