Multi-Mix PICOTM Products for WLAN 802.11a and 802.11b Applications Introduced by Merrimac
WEST CALDWELL, N.J., April 11, 2002: Merrimac Industries, Inc. (AMEX: MRM) today announced that it has expanded its Multi-Mix PICO Z-Series by introducing four new directional couplers and two quadrature hybrids for 802.11a (5.5GHz) and 802.11b (2.4GHz) Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications. The 2.4GHz and 5.5GHz WLAN products bring the total number of Multi-Mix PICOTM products to sixteen since Multi-Mix PICOTM was introduced in July 2001.
The 802.11a and 802.11b WLAN global systems market is expected to more than double by 2005, trending towards increases in the 5GHz frequency applications. WLAN 802.11a and 802.11b applications include such markets as handheld PCs and PDAs (personal digital assistant), wearable PCs, informational tablets, wireless TVs and point-of-sale retail terminals.
Chairman and CEO Mason N. Carter commented, "Multi-Mix PICO delivers single and multifunction products that have the smallest footprint and overall size, and the highest power handling capability for any multilayer construction type product available today without sacrificing performance. These products were specifically designed for use in 802.11a and 802.11b applications."
"PICO products offer the following advantages:
- Reduces the physical dimensions of conventional multilayer products by more than 84%, substantially saving board space.
- Incredible power handling ability of up to 100 Watts CW (Continuous Wave).
- Extremely low insertion loss providing optimal efficiency.
- Surface mount compatible.
- Cost effectivity.
"PICO products, together with other active and passive devices, can be combined as building blocks to produce complete multifunction subsystems in physical dimensions normally required by single function devices using conventional technology."
Carter continued, "By utilizing its building block architecture, the Multi-Mix® process embeds semiconductor devices, MMICs, etched resistors, passive circuit elements and plated-through via holes to form a three-dimensional subsystem enclosure that requires no additional packaging. Multi-Mix® is ideally suited for 802.11a and 802.11b applications where there is a need to have the digital chip set integrated with the RF front-end and antenna to form a WLAN Micro-Multifunction Module (MMFM®). A Multi-Mix PICOTM 5.77GHz WLAN filter is currently in design and is expected to be introduced to the marketplace shortly.
"Merrimac has already introduced the following Multi-Mix PICOTM products: quadrature hybrids, directional couplers, in-line multicouplers, power dividers, phase shifters, and hybrid junctions. Merrimac is setting the standard by providing innovative RF Microwave design engineers and decision-makers alternatives to conventional, bulky, high-priced components and multifunction modules."
Samples are available for qualified product designs.

About Merrimac
Merrimac Industries, Inc. is a leader in the design and manufacture of Multi-Mix PICO RF Microwave components, assemblies and Micro-Multifunction (MMFM) Modules, serving the wireless telecommunications industry worldwide with enabling technologies for space, defense and commercial applications. Merrimac is focused on providing Total Integrated Packaging SolutionsTM with Multi-Mix® Microtechnology, a leading edge competency providing value to our customers through miniaturization and integration. The Multi-Mix process for microwave, multilayer integrated MMFM circuitry is a patented method developed by Merrimac Industries based on fluoropolymer composite substrates. The fusion bonding of multilayer structures provides a homogeneous dielectric medium for superior electrical performance at microwave frequencies. The bonded layers may incorporate embedded semiconductor devices, MMICs, etched resistors, passive circuit elements and plated-through via holes to form a three-dimensional subsystem enclosure that requires no further packaging. Merrimac Industries facilities are registered under ISO 9000, an internationally developed set of quality criteria for manufacturing operations.
Merrimac Industries, Inc. and its subsidiary Filtran Microcircuits Inc., with locations in West Caldwell, NJ, San Jose, Costa Rica and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, have approximately 240 co-workers dedicated to the design and manufacture of signal processing components, gold plating of high-frequency microstrip, bonded stripline and thick metal-backed Teflon (PTFE) micro-circuitry and subsystems providing Total Integrated Packaging Solutions for wireless applications.
